Sustainable farm holidays in Val Pusteria, South Tyrol

Something for every occasion

So, is this your first time to our page? It’s good to have you here! Feel free to stay a while and learn more about us, the Hirschenhof, and what a sustainable holiday on our farm in Dobbiaco in South Tyrol looks like. Let’s begin with a brief introduction. Curtain up …

The host family Verena and Manuel with Samuel and Matthis - Hirschenhof

Verena

As the saying goes: Ladies first! Farmer Verena is the heart and soul of the Hirschenhof greeting our guests with her warm and welcoming ways as soon as they arrive. And she does this with her sweet treats, too: as a gifted apple strudel baker, she not only won over Farmer Manuel’s heart in no time …

Manuel

He is the man of the farm and stables a true outdoorsman who loves to roam the woods and meadows of our farm in Dobbiaco. Alongside his two boys, Manuel’s greatest pride lies with the cows and calves, who live at the Hirschenhof, together with a few chickens and rabbits. He’s always happy to introduce them to our guests.

Samuel

Next up is little Samuel, our resident chicken farmer at the Hirschenhof. His heart beats not only for football but also for our feathered friends in the hen house, whom he cares for each day with great affection. Samuel is also always ready to lend a hand in the garden whenever needed.

Mathis

Now we come to the youngest of the bunch: Mathis is a real whirlwind and and brings plenty of fun and action to our farm in Dobbiaco. If he’s not in the garden, you’ll probably find him helping Papa Manuel with the haymaking and grain harvest – after all, that doesn’t get done on its own.

Grandma Maria & Grandpa Josef

Anyone familiar with farm life knows: every helping hand counts! And since many hands make light work Manuel’s parents Maria and Josef are always there when needed. While Grandma Maria lovingly looks after the vegetable garden and the blossoming beauty of our farm holiday home in Val Pusteria, grandpa Josef is always up for a friendly chat with our guests.

The Hirschenhof before the Second World War
Once upon a time…

Our Hirschenhof is the oldest farmstead in Valle San Silvestro, a hamlet of Dobbiaco. It was once the only inn in the village, where the locals would gather for sociable get-togethers. After all three brothers who ran the farm at the time fell in the Second World War, the guesthouse unfortunately had to close. The estate passed into the hands of two women, who managed the Hirschenhof with the help of maids and farmhands.

… and so the story continued

In 1947, Johann Kahn arrived at the Hirschenhof as a farmhand and married the maid Katharina Kristler. They had four children, and since the then-owners of the farm had no direct heirs, the estate passed to their eldest son Josef Kahn – our grandfather. He married Maria Tschurtschenthaler in 1985. Manuel, the elder of their two sons, took over the farm in 2024 together with his wife Verena and their sons Samuel and Mathis.

A piece of holiday happiness

Our garden is known among Hirschenhof guests as a “little paradise“, with its magnificent views and large sunbathing lawn, it is a wonderful place to unwind. While our young guests burn off some energy on the playground with its trampoline, sandbox, slide and swing, grown-ups can soak up the sun on the lawn. In summer, the barbecue area at our farm in Dobbiaco is especially popular – and not to forget, Grandma’s raised beds and the herb garden, where guests are free to help themselves.

Sustainability close to our hearts

At the Hirschenhof, we do our best to keep our ecological footprint as small as possible. Sustainability is more than just a trend at our farm holiday home in South Tyrol – it is a way of life. Since 1995, a woodchip heating system powered by timber from our own forest has provided our energy needs. Since 2010, we’ve also had a photovoltaic system generating green electricity right here on the farm. We pay close attention to careful waste separation and truly value the pure mountain water that flows from our taps – so we completely do without bottled water. Our vegetables and herbs come from our own garden, while the eggs and meat are sourced directly from our own animals.

Farm-made products

A little piece of happiness: in our small farm shop, you’ll find not only fresh eggs from our happy hens but also a range of lovingly handmade products. Why not try our delicious “Kaminwurzen” – a traditional South Tyrolean sausage speciality, cold-smoked and air-dried made with meat from our own animals.
